We stayed in an apartment hotel in the traditional, commercial area of Sheung Wan on Hong Kong island in November.
We had chosen to stay in this part of town deliberately, months beforehand, because we wanted to experience a more ‘local’ side of the territory, plus Sheung Wan lay immediately west of the busy Central district and was just a short walk from interesting sights as well as major MTR (underground), Airport Shuttle, bus, tram and ferry services. It proved a particularly good choice during the autumn’s troubles because the protestors’ targets were elsewhere, and we had reliable access to a choice of routes to wherever we wished to go.
I rose early on several mornings to illustrate the local commercial area waking up, with many Chinese shopkeepers and business owners using little hand carts and trolleys to ferry their wares through the crowded & cluttered streets.
Sheung Wan is the commercial centre of the Chinese medicine trade in Hong Kong, and many retail outlets had the most spectacular display of unidentifiable dried and preserved organic materials (hopefully none that included parts originating from pangolins or bats…).
