While tramping the streets of Great Shelford and adjacent villages for Coronation images of interest to the editors of the Great Shelford Village News (see previous post), I also came across a number of scenes that seemed to comment more broadly on the monarchy in Britain today, and perhaps on the divided state of our nation. Some were clearly deliberate and planned, while others were perhaps just serendipitous.
Here is a set from Little Shelford, a village with around a sixth of the population of its more cosmopolitan and Greater neighbour, but in comparison it was positively dripping with bunting. I have been known to refer to it as ‘The Grand Duchy of Little Shelford’, for good reason I’m sure you’ll agree!
I could go on posting lots more from Little Shelford in similar vein, but let’s move on to three from the Shelfords, Stapleford and Trumpington that could be interpreted to illustrate something a little less positive…
Finally, a celebration of how British it is to show restraint in public displays: “Yes, one does support the monarchy, but one doesn’t want to overdo one’s expression of support, does one?”
Otherwise known as “Spot the Flag”!
