Visits to the Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Rd, Stanley and Cheung Chau island

Heavy with incense smoke, there has been a temple to the gods Man Tai and Mo Tai on Hollywood road, Sheung Wan since the mid-19th century. It’s a place for quiet contemplation amid the city’s crazy pace of life.

The large village of Stanley lies on the south side of Hong Kong island, and the best way to get there is by taking a bus from close to the Star Ferry pier in Central. After passing through the Aberdeen Tunnel, the drive along the south side corniche road is spectacular, and Stanley has a pleasant, holiday feel with people out to enjoy themselves by the sea.

The island of Cheung Chau lies around 40’ south-west of Hong Kong’s Central Outer Islands Ferry Pier. Boats shuttle there and back regularly throughout the day, and the island has a sizeable population, many of whom take the ferries to work on Hong Kong island or Kowloon.

We were glad to see little has changed there since our last visit, when we were living in Hong Kong in 1985, although the harbour contained many fewer live-aboard junks.
