Negombo, Sri Lanka

In February 2017 we returned to Sri Lanka after a gap of 32 years.

We'd had two holidays on the island in the early and mid-1980s, immediately before the war, so this was a significant return for us. Fortunately it mostly has changed little - certainly it hasn't been spoiled, and there is obviously a tight grip kept on development. Almost all businesses are locally-owned, and there's a welcome lack of global logos.

Traffic, however, was enormously worse, with beeping horns and lorries belching fumes especially intrusive around the lake in Kandy.

We started with a couple of nights in the beach town of Negombo...
